The origins of the name Pueblo Rico (Rich Town) came from when Spanish colonizers arrived and were amazed to see the native Colombian tribes had a large amount of gold. After colonizing the area, the economy was based on plantain, sugar cane, and coffee production. The land is extremely fertile and to this day the name of "rich town" is still used to refer to how rich the land is for agricultural production.
